Schmaling Celebrates 116 years as a Carnegie Library and Receives News of a Fabulous Anniversary Gift!

Text with floral design: "Happy 116th Anniversary, Schmaling Library!"

On Wednesday, October 27, 1909 the Fulton Public Library's brand-new Carnegie library building opened its doors to the public for the very first time! Today we celebrate 116 years in this building! (The Fulton Public Library originally opened above a storefront downtown in November of 1894). The old building has changed a bit over the years, most notably with the 1989 addition that included the elevator and a staff office. But overall, she still shows her early twentieth century heritage well. We're grateful to Dr. Hannah Schmaling who donated the land for the library and to Andrew Carnegie who donated the money for the construction of the building. Last week, the library received word that the Carnegie Corporation of New York will gift all Carnegie libraries still in operation with $10,000! The gift will be awarded in 2026 in honor of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Schmaling is one of 1,280 Carnegie library buildings still in operation.
